ARE YOU LIVING BEHIND A MASK? By Dennis Armfield
We all wear masks. Not for parties or pandemics – but the invisible ones: The roles we play to fit in, succeed, stay safe, or keep the peace; The Tough Guy, The Provider, The Joker, The Yes-Man and many more.
We all wear masks. Not for parties or pandemics – but the invisible ones.
The roles we play to fit in, succeed, stay safe, or keep the peace: The Tough Guy. The Provider. The Joker. The Yes-Man. The Lone Wolf and many more.
These masks aren’t bad. Sometimes they protect us or get us through tough seasons.
But here’s the danger: If we wear them too long, we can start to forget who we really are underneath.
A Moment That Woke Me Up
Not long ago, I was in a conversation where I caught myself nodding, agreeing, even laughing along – while inside, a voice was saying,
“This isn’t me.”
My stomach was tight. My jaw clenched. I could feel myself shrinking just a little to make everyone else comfortable.
I was performing. Playing the “easy-going guy” mask.
When I left, I felt flat. Disconnected. Almost like I’d left a piece of myself behind.
The truth? I stayed quiet not because I didn’t have an opinion, but because I didn’t want to be judged, disliked, lose the connection or make things awkward for anybody.
Next time a similar topic came up, I took a deep breath. My heart was pounding. And I said what I really thought – gently, with curiosity, but honestly.
And guess what? The world didn’t end. No one stormed off. It created a deeper conversation, deeper understanding and clarity.
Even more powerful – someone else spoke up too. My honesty permitted them to be real.
I walked away feeling lighter, more aligned, and strangely proud.
It reminded me of this: When we dare to drop the mask – even a little – we permit others to do the same.
Turning Up the Volume on Your True Self
Here’s a question I’ve been sitting with:
What would happen if you turned up the volume on being your true self by just 5%?
Not 100%. Not ripping the mask off dramatically. Just 5% more honesty. 5% more courage. 5% more you.
This Isn’t Just a “Man Thing”
If you’re reading this – man or woman – ask yourself:
- Where do you wear a mask most often?
- What would it feel like to take it off, even with one trusted person?
- Do you create space for others to be real, or do you reward them for staying safe?
When we create environments where people feel safe to show up authentically – at home, at work, in friendships – connection deepens, trust builds, and growth takes off.
A Challenge (if you choose to accept it)
- Notice your masks. Catch yourself when you’re about to put one on.
- Take it off in one safe moment.
- Celebrate it. Recognise the courage it took to be seen.
Masks aren’t bad – they’re often protective. But don’t forget to take them off.
Because the world doesn’t need a better performance from you. It needs the real you!
