“IF YOU COULD BURN ONE BELIEF TO THE GROUND, WHAT WOULD IT BE?” By Dennis Armfield
At a recent men’s networking night, I reflected on this deeply. For me, it’s the belief that as men, we shouldn’t put ourselves first.
We’re taught to prioritise work, family, responsibilities — and of course, those things matter. But if we’re not taking care of ourselves first — mentally, emotionally, physically — what are our loved ones really getting from us?
I’m choosing to rebuild that belief: putting ourselves first isn’t selfish, it’s essential. When we show up fully for ourselves, we show up better for others. And alongside this, I’ve been thinking about tall poppy syndrome — we all love to be celebrated, yet somehow celebrating each other’s wins feels uncomfortable. Why don’t we do it more often? Recognising achievement and courage is not boastful — it’s human.
What I’ve been rebuilding instead is a new understanding: true strength is connection, self-awareness, and the courage to show up authentically. It’s knowing who you are, being proud of your story, and walking alongside others — not carrying the load alone.
That’s exactly what M.E.N. (My Elevated Network) is about:
- My — taking ownership of your journey.
- Elevated — choosing growth, awareness, and higher standards for ourselves.
- Network — recognising we don’t have to do it alone; we rise when we’re connected.
This reflection reminded me that M.E.N. isn’t just a program or a workbook — it’s a space where we challenge outdated beliefs, rewrite our definitions of masculinity, and equip men to step into life with clarity, energy, and purpose.
Prioritise yourself. Celebrate each other. Rise together.
