MENTORSHIP CHANGED MY LIFE – HERE’S WHAT I’VE LEARNED By Dennis Armfield
I used to think mentorship was something you only got from a boss, a coach, or someone with a fancy title. Something formal. Something “official.”
And then I realised I had been wrong – profoundly wrong.
Mentorship isn’t a title. It’s not confined to an office or a boardroom. It’s in the conversations that stick with you long after the coffee is gone, the advice that lands when you least expect it, and the quiet examples set by people who live their values even when no one is watching.
For me, it started with small moments. The mate who encouraged me to speak up when I doubted myself. The older colleague who challenged me to take responsibility rather than avoid discomfort. The friend who simply listened when I didn’t know how to ask for help. Their hindsight became my foresight.
But here’s the thing: mentorship works both ways. Somewhere along the line, I realised I had insights, experiences, and lessons I could pass on – sometimes to people much younger, sometimes to peers, and sometimes to someone who just needed a nudge of encouragement. That’s when I understood the real power of mentorship: it’s a circle, not a ladder.
I’ve learned a few truths that keep showing up in my life:
- Vulnerability is strength. Asking for help doesn’t make you weak; it makes you human. And it allows someone else to step into their role as a mentor.
- Boundaries matter. Saying “no” or admitting when you can’t help preserves energy and integrity – for both the mentor and the mentee.
- Community is everything. Growth doesn’t happen in isolation. Honest, non-judgmental spaces -where people show up authentically – accelerate learning and connection.
- Small actions create ripples. A message to check in, a shared story, a word of advice – these moments often have more impact than we realise.
I carry these lessons into every conversation, every connection, and every relationship. Mentorship isn’t a program or a process – it’s a way of living.
If this resonates with you, I want to invite you to consider mentoring through the M.E.N. program. It’s a space where men come together to support, challenge, and grow alongside each other – and your experience could be exactly the insight someone else needs.
Mentorship is rarely about grand gestures. It’s about showing up, being real, and creating a circle where wisdom, support, and accountability flow freely. That circle has changed my life. I know it can change yours too.
