PATIENCE VS IMPATIENCE By Maria Saladino
Each Friday, I catch up with a beloved friend. We chat about anything, everything and all that comes in between. Recently, the topic of patience came up in our conversation. Later, I pondered the idea quite deeply. This is where I landed…
Impatience is a construct. It’s a way of being that we choose because we have decided that this very moment simply, isn’t enough. Nothing is missing! When we trust that every breath, every delay, every unfolding is on purpose, the urge to rush disappears. We stop waiting for life to begin somewhere else. And when we’re no longer waiting for something better, patience becomes irrelevant.
Presence replaces it.
Impatience isn’t a flaw. It’s a signal that we think our life is on hold. Nothing is late. Nothing is off track. When we truly believe this moment matters, we stop waiting for a better one. And when we stop waiting, patience is no longer required. We only feel impatient when we think life hasn’t started yet.
The moment we realise this moment is the point, waiting ends!
Impatience doesn’t come from time moving too slowly. It comes from the belief that this moment isn’t the one that matters.
Often, we treat life like a waiting room. We sit with crossed arms, glancing at the clock, convinced the real moment is just around the corner. The breakthrough. The clarity. The version of ourselves who finally feels settled, whole, complete. Impatience is born right there – in that quiet assumption that now is inadequate.
Here’s the reality check:
Nothing is on pause. Every moment of our life is active. Teaching. Learning. Growing. Even the uncomfortable ones. Especially those. When we truly understand that nothing is random and nothing is wasted, the urge to rush dissolves. We stop negotiating with time.
Patience, then, isn’t something we need to practice or master. It only exists when we’re resisting the present. When we’re enjoying the moment we’re in, patience becomes irrelevant. We’re not enduring life. We’re participating in it.
This doesn’t mean we stop dreaming or desiring more. It means we stop believing that fulfillment lives in the future. Let growth happen without treating today like a problem to escape. When we trust the timing of our life, waiting ends. And when waiting ends, peace quietly takes its place. Not because everything is perfect, but because we finally realised nothing is missing.
- Where in my life am I treating the present like an obstacle instead of an invitation?
- What am I convinced will “fix everything” once it arrives, and what does that belief cost me right now?
- If this moment truly mattered, how would I show up differently today?
- What am I rushing past that might be trying to teach me something essential?
- Who would I become if I stopped waiting for permission, timing, or certainty to fully be here?
Each one is a small mirror. Not for judgment, just for recognition.
“The only reason we create impatience is because we think we need patience, and we don’t. If we are enjoying every single moment of our life, because we know every single moment of our life is there for a reason, then we won’t be waiting for something better to come along. And when we are not waiting for something better to come along, we don’t need to be patient.” Bashar
