The Power of P.A.U.S.E. By Dennis Armfield

I opened a recent session by standing in silence for ten seconds.

No introduction. No agenda slide. Just silence.

Ten seconds doesn’t sound like much until you’re in a room full of people and nobody is allowed to fill it. Watch what happens. People shift in their seats. They check their phones out of habit, even though nothing buzzed. Some laugh to break the tension. Some yelled words of encouragement. Almost nobody just… sits in it.

That discomfort was the point. It told the room everything I needed them to know before I said a word: silence has become foreign to us. And if silence feels foreign, so does hearing our own voice underneath it.

We spent the rest of the session unpacking why. Beliefs don’t arrive fully formed. They’re built from what we repeatedly hear, see, and experience, until they become background noise we stop questioning. Phones, comparison, expectation, pressure to perform, pressure to provide. That noise doesn’t just distract us; it teaches us. It teaches us what success looks like and what we’re supposed to believe about ourselves, whether any of it is true.

This is where I think men get caught out. We’re conditioned to treat pausing as weakness, as losing momentum, as something you do after you’ve earned it. So, we don’t pause. We push. We perform. And the noise keeps writing the story for us because we never stopped long enough to check if it’s accurate.

This is exactly why I built My Elevated Network. Not as another space to talk about grinding harder, but as one of the few places where men are permitted to stop and ask what they think, feel, and need, without it being framed as a weakness.

In the session, we used a simple framework to make that practical: Pause, Acknowledge, Understand, Select, Engage.

Create space before reacting (P). Check in on what you’re thinking and feeling (A). Notice where it shows up in your body (U). Get honest about what you need (S). Then take one small action (E).

None of that requires an hour of meditation or a retreat. It requires ten seconds of silence and the willingness to sit in it.

You will spend every day of your life with one person: YOU!

The relationship you build with that person shapes every other relationship you have. You don’t need to change everything tomorrow. You just need to practise to P.A.U.S.E long enough to hear yourself again.

Where does noise show up loudest in your life right now? I’d genuinely like to know.
