TRIGGERS ARE TREASURES By Jodi O’Connell

Let’s be honest…Most of us don’t enjoy being triggered. We don’t wake up in the morning hoping someone will challenge us, disappoint us, ignore us, criticise us, or push one of our emotional buttons. Yet some of the greatest opportunities for growth often arrive wrapped up in exactly those experiences.

At The Elevation Company, we often say:

Triggers are treasures.

Not because they feel good…..Not because we enjoy them…..But because they reveal something we may not have been able to see otherwise.

A trigger is like a spotlight. It shines a light on a part of ourselves that is asking for attention, understanding, healing, or growth.

The challenge is that most of us have been conditioned to look outward when we’re triggered. We focus on what they said…..What they did…..How unfair it was….How they should be different.

And while there may be truth in some of those observations, they rarely lead us towards our greatest learning. The treasure lies somewhere else.

It lies within.

When something triggers us, our body often knows before our mind catches up.

Our stomach tightens, our chest contracts, our jaw clenches, and/or our heart races.

The emotion rises.

And in that moment, we have a choice: We can react or we can become curious.

One of the most powerful questions we can ask is:

“What is this really about?”

Not the situation or the other person. Us.

What belief has just been activated? What story am I telling myself? What fear has shown up? What old wound has been touched?

Often, if we follow the thread far enough, we find ourselves standing face-to-face with what we call our Default Drama.

That core limiting belief that sits quietly beneath the surface until something brings it to life.

For some people it is: “I don’t matter.”

For others: “I’m not enough.” “I’m invisible.” “I’m not important.” “I don’t belong.”

These beliefs often form early in life and continue to influence how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us.

Then something happens in the present moment and suddenly the old story comes rushing back. The interesting thing is that the intensity of our reaction is often less about what just happened and more about what it reminds us of.

That’s why two people can experience the exact same situation and respond completely differently. The trigger isn’t creating the wound. It’s revealing it.

And that is where the treasure lives.

Not in the discomfort.

Not in the blame.

Not in the drama.

In the awareness.

Because once we can see the pattern, we have an opportunity to change it.

This doesn’t mean we excuse poor behaviour or take responsibility for things that belong to someone else.

In fact, one of the healthiest things we can do is separate:

What is my stuff?

And

What is their stuff?

Other people have their own fears, stories, pressures, and Default Dramas operating beneath the surface. Understanding this allows us to approach situations with greater compassion and emotional intelligence.

It helps us respond rather than react. It helps us stay connected to ourselves rather than becoming consumed by someone else’s behaviour.

Most importantly, it allows us to learn. Because every trigger carries a message. Every emotional reaction is pointing towards something. Every uncomfortable moment contains an invitation. An invitation to become more self-aware. An invitation to challenge an old belief. An invitation to grow beyond a pattern that may no longer serve us.

The next time you find yourself triggered, resist the temptation to push the feeling away or make someone else responsible for it.

Pause.

Notice where it shows up in your body.

Get curious.

Ask yourself what this moment might be trying to teach you.

Because hidden inside every trigger is a treasure.

A deeper understanding of yourself.

A chance to heal and grow.

A chance to become more conscious, more intentional, and more emotionally intelligent than you were the day before.

The treasure isn’t the trigger itself.

The treasure is the awareness it brings.

And awareness is where transformation begins.
