WHY WE DON’T LET CULTURE JUST EVOLVE By Jodi O’Connell

Leave a garden alone long enough and you don’t get wildflowers, you get weeds. Culture works the same way. “Let it evolve naturally” sounds relaxed and lovely, but what it really means is you’ve handed the steering wheel to whoever complains loudest, whatever happened on the worst Tuesday last month, and habits nobody ever actually chose. That’s not culture. That’s just… whatever survived.

At The Elevation Company, we like our culture the way we like our coffee: intentional, strong, and definitely not left to chance.

Values first, vibes second

Every solid culture starts with values based leadership, not good intentions or crossed fingers. Before a team can perform, grow, or even get through a Monday meeting without someone rolling their eyes, it needs to know its “why,” the essential energy and values that actually drive its people.

That’s what our Values Based Leadership Ladder™ is built for: mapping the personal, team, and business growth that comes from leading on purpose instead of hoping for the best and calling it culture.

Agreements beat assumptions, every time

Healthy culture runs on agreements, not the wildly optimistic assumption that everyone’s on the same page. (They’re rarely on the same page. Sometimes not even the same book.)

A few worth stealing for any team: support the purpose and goals everyone actually signed up for, assume good in each other before jumping to conclusions, raise issues while they’re still small and manageable, and only make agreements you genuinely intend to keep. And when something isn’t working, look at the system before you look at the person. Nine times out of ten, it’s not Tom. It’s the process Tom is stuck using.

Energy is contagious, choose wisely

Culture isn’t only what people do, it’s the energy they bring while doing it. That’s where Emotional Productivity™ comes in: harnessing the emotional capacity of people and teams so work feels sustainable instead of soul-crushing. Elevated energy, celebrated wins (even the small, slightly embarrassing ones), and a genuine stance of curiosity all add up. Left unattended, so does the opposite, and nobody wants to work in an office that runs on sighs.

The punchline

An evolved culture is built from leftovers. An intentional one is built on purpose, which, unlike leftovers, actually tastes good the next day.

When leaders own culture the way they own strategy or the budget, people feel it immediately. They know what the team stands for, how to speak up when something’s off, and why their contribution actually matters, not just on paper, but in the room.

So no, we don’t let culture evolve. We’d rather elevate it. Slightly less mysterious, considerably more fun.
