LEAD FROM THE CHEST by Dennis Armfield
We talk a lot about leading with your head.
Strategy. Structure. Control.
But the head doesn’t pump the blood.
The heart does.
And if you’ve ever stood in a huddle, a boardroom, or beside someone breaking –
You’ll know:
Heart is where the real leadership begins.
But don’t get it twisted.
This isn’t soft.
Heart doesn’t mean nice.
It means honest.
It means fierce.
It means you show up with backbone and belief –
especially when it’s hard.
Heart-Based Discipline
It’s waking up when you don’t want to.
It’s choosing character over comfort.
Not because it’s fun.
But because it’s right.
Heart-based discipline is about doing what matters,
not just what’s measured.
It’s not military.
It’s meaningful.
Heart-Based Drive
This isn’t hustle for ego.
It’s movement with meaning.
It’s knowing your ‘why’
and letting it pull you, not push you.
It’s drive that doesn’t just climb mountains –
it brings others with you.
It’s sweaty palms.
Fast heartbeat.
And still stepping forward.
The Debrief
We don’t debrief to tick boxes.
We debrief to grow.
To learn.
To ask the hard question:
“What else can I learn?”
It’s not weakness.
It’s the strongest damn thing you can do.
To look back — honestly —
So you can lead forward — powerfully.
Debriefing isn’t about blame.
It’s about ownership.
And from that?
Growth that sticks.
So, what’s the Framework?
It’s not complicated.
Just upside-down:
Discipline on one side.
Drive on the other.
Debrief at the base.
All held inside a heart.
That’s where I play now.
That’s where real leadership lives.
Not just heads leading heads.
But hearts lighting the way.
Because the world doesn’t need more perfect leaders —
It needs present ones.
Grounded.
Disciplined.
Driven.
Reflective.
The kind that lead from the chest.
