THE BADGE OF BUSY by Heather Yelland

In today’s fast-paced world, there is a pervasive tendency to equate being busy with being successful. Many individuals wear their busy schedules like badges of honour, believing that the more they do, the more they achieve. However, this relentless pursuit of busy-ness often leads to burnout and a diminished quality of life, and it is increasingly clear that busy-ness is not synonymous with productivity or achievement and draws no direct correlation to fulfilment and contentment.

Contrary to popular belief, simply being busy is not an indicator of success or effectiveness. Rather, it can be a sign of poor time management and misplaced priorities. When we fill our days with countless tasks and obligations, we may feel a temporary sense of accomplishment, but this can come at the expense of our health, relationships, connection to our best self, and overall well-being.

The glorification of busy-ness is deeply ingrained in our culture, where long work hours and packed schedules are often seen as markers of dedication and ambition. Yet, this mindset can prevent us from focusing on what truly matters. It can create a cycle where we are constantly chasing the next task without ever pausing to debrief or reflect on our goals and values.  In TEC speak, we say it results in being immersed in a Basal or base energy where everything feels difficult and no matter how hard you work, you can’t catch a break!

The key to breaking free from the busy-ness trap or the “action vortex” (as we like to call it) lies in working smarter, not harder. This means prioritizing tasks that are aligned with our heart as well as the businesses long-term objectives.  It means optimizing our efforts to find the greatest flow and achieve maximum impact. It involves being strategic about how we allocate our time and energy and recognizing that productivity is not about the quantity of work we do, but the quality.

Working smarter requires you to truly connect with yourself, take charge of where your energy is going, because where your focus goes, your energy flows, and energy is creative. If you focus on busy-ness, your creative energy goes into greater busy-ness!

As a leader, you need to be able to manage your personal energy, leverage technology and resources to streamline processes and eliminate inefficiencies. It requires a willingness to delegate responsibilities and collaborate with others to achieve common goals. By adopting a smarter approach to work, we can accomplish more in less time and create space for rest, creativity, innovation, and personal growth.

Despite the obvious drawbacks, many of us continue to allow ourselves to become overwhelmed by busy-ness. One reason for this is the pressure to conform to societal expectations. We fear that if we are not constantly busy, we will be perceived as lazy or unmotivated. Additionally, the fast-paced nature of modern life, driven by technological advancements and a culture of instant gratification, can make it difficult to slow down and prioritize.

Another factor is the lack of mindfulness and self-awareness. We often fail to recognize when we are over-committing ourselves because we are caught up in the momentum of daily routines. It is only when we experience the negative consequences of busy-ness—such as stress, exhaustion, and missed opportunities—that we realize the need for change.

There is also a psychological aspect to busy-ness. For some, it serves as a distraction from deeper issues, such as dissatisfaction with their current situation or fear of failure. By keeping busy, they avoid confronting these challenges and maintain a semblance of control – perceived control at least!

I propose that while busy-ness may seem like a necessary aspect of modern life, it is important to really investigate its true value and impact. By ensuring we remain connected to our own heart, shifting our focus from quantity to quality, and embracing a smarter approach to work, we can create a more balanced and fulfilling life AND business. It is essential to recognize that true success is not measured by how busy we are, but by how effectively we use our time to discover and live the difference we are here to make!
