My name is Sarah Rowe and I feel so lucky to be part of the amazing Green Supercamp family.
I began my journey when I saw the director of Green SuperCamp Australia, Heather Yelland, speaking at an event. Heather’s passion and drive was inspiring. Heather spoke about this wonderful program called Green Supercamp, it sounds awesome and I wanted in. I applied to be a team leader, was accepted and rocked up to Cave Hill Creek in my chalkboard car. My life has never been the same since. The words I would use to describe my first experience would be of love, understanding, connection, growth and joy. To not only feel the transformation within myself but see this within the young people who experienced this program was beautiful, emotional and made me burst with pride. Over the years I have been a team leader, facilitator and camp co-ordinator. I was fortunate enough to work for Heather and The Elevation Company as the Elevate Children co-ordinator and loved it.
Before getting involved in the program I had completed a course in Neuro Linguistic Programming and was excited to learn the Supercamp program was built on NLP principals. I love the way in which this camp incorporates positive language and ensures young people experience small successes to build confidence and a deeper appreciation for themselves. When undertaking my Supercamp facilitator training at Stanford University, I was also completing my Bachelor of Psychology; I love the brain and what it is capable of. I learnt that pioneering neuroscientists such as Marian Diamond with her theory of enriched environments inspired the way in which the program was put together made me even more excited to be involved. Everything within the Supercamp program is so purposely put together, from the position of the affirmation posters on the walls to the types of music being played during certain activities and the way in which movements are used to help remember the strategies.
One of the elements about the program that I find the most exciting is that by creating a space in which young people can be successful and allow them to be completely themselves we are able to draw out ideas from them that are constantly surprising to the young people and leave the facilitators in awe of the young leaders of the future.
I love the way this program attracts campers and staff for all walks of life from all over Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and so many more wonderful destinations.
I look forward to April and October every year, where I get to continue to learn from and teach young people. It is such a privilege and honour to be involved with Green Supercamp Australia and all those who have the opportunity to join us. I wish that every young person could experience the transformation that Green Supercamp is able to offer. Thank you to Heather Yelland, The Elevation Company and the Quantum Learning Network for making this program possible in Australia.
