Yes, you!
At the end of a day who is going to be with you as you close your eyes and go to sleep? Maybe your partner, a young child snuggled up with you or even a furry companion. Yet there’s been someone there from the very beginning. You. Your thoughts. The good old brain.
You would think with the amount of time that we spend with our thoughts that we would have a pretty good grasp of them and maintain control! Right? Somehow it seems to be one of the things that escape many of us.
As a facilitator as Green SuperCamp Australia, we talk about speaking with good purpose to the campers. What does that mean? When we present it to the campers, we explain to them to speak honestly and kindly. Additionally, they should think before they speak to make sure the intention behind the words are positive and sincere.
There is however one part of this conversation with the campers that I have on a regular basis, outside of camp, with the people I encounter in my day to day life. These words have power and we need to be aware of what we say and we have to stay aware of what we let stick to us from other people’s words. If someone walking down the street calls us an idiot, we can choose how hurtful that will be to us.
The one thing we will never run into walking down the street is our own thoughts. They somehow have this power to be the exception to the rules. If we think negative thoughts about ourselves, we seem to just accept it as fact. Our brain has a goalie looking out for everything that people verbally
kick in our direction, but why does the goalie go to a time out when it’s just us?
This isn’t something we can turn around in just a few minutes because unfortunately, this has all been going on so long that we’ve let it become a habit. Have no fear!! This can be changed, by a new awareness. Similar to when on a diet, we stay very alert to what food we put into our body and the changes it might have on us, we need to look at each of the thoughts we have relating to ourselves and our abilities. A few negative thoughts might slip by, but that’s okay, this is the creation of a new habit to find those negative thoughts as they show their head and put a new spin on them.
For every self-doubt that appears, if you can find the opposite or positive affirmation to it you can make the transformation for your brain to speak with good purpose to yourself.
